Man steals woman's purse at gunpoint outside Walmart
Friday, October 14, 2011

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Columbia police have released surveillance photos of a man they said stole a woman's purse at gunpoint in the parking lot of the Walmart on Garners Ferry Road.

Police Chief Randy Scott said the incident happened around 6:00pm Monday. The 41-year-old victim told police a man tried to steal her purse through her open window after she finished placing grocery bags in the trunk of her car.

When the victim resisted the purse snatching, she told police the man pointed a handgun at her. The victim immediately stopped resisting, and Scott said the suspect stole her purse then ran to a getaway car. The victim was not hurt during the incident.

That vehicle is described as possibly being a black, four-door similar to a Chevy Impala or Grand Prix with a sunroof and a broken tail light. The purse snatcher is described as approximately 5'9"-6'0" tall and weighing approximately 160 pounds.

Surveillance photos show the suspect wearing a white shirt with short, black sleeves and two unique logos on the front and one centered in the back. The suspect was also wearing white tennis shoes.

The second suspect, who may have been driving the getaway car, is described to be about 5'7"–5'9" tall wearing a yellow baseball cap, a white V-neck T-shirt, tan cargo-style shorts and black shoes.

Scott asked anyone with information about the crime to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
