Halloween curfew to be enforced against registered sex offenders
Friday, October 28, 2011

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - With Halloween coming up, the state is looking to local law enforcement officials to enforce a curfew for registered sex offenders.

In Newberry County, there are going to pay home visits to twelve offenders to make sure they aren't out during the night.

Sheriff Lee Foster says only sex offenders who are on parole have to abide by the 5:30pm to 9:00pm curfew.

"My suggestion is that you stay involved in your children, especially on these holidays when do have children out because there a portion of the population that prey on children," said Foster.

In addition to the curfew, sex offenders also have to turn off their porch lights, not hand out candy, and avoid participating in any Halloween parties or carnivals.

The small number of sex offenders in Newberry County makes home visits possible and Foster is hopeful that no one will violate their parole.

The door-to-door technique is also being used in Richland County. They have about 80 sex offenders that they will be checking on to make sure they are home with the porch lights off.

Meanwhile in Lexington County, they are planning on doing the same thing, but will take things a step further by stopping by sex offenders' homes who aren't on parole to discourage them from handing out candy.
