Family's dog fatally shot in fenced-in yard on Crestview Ave.
Monday, October 10, 2011

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A Columbia woman and her husband are trying to find out who would want to fatally wound one of their four dogs Sunday morning.

Eileen Sellaro says she returned home from work and let all four of their dogs outside in their fenced-in front yard around 9:00am. Moments later, she heard gunshots and ran outside.

To her horror, she found her 8-year-old Chow mix, Donatella, who had been shot in the back. Witnesses reported seeing a black Crown Victoria leave the scene.

The couple says while their dogs bark, they're not aggressive and they don't know why someone would shoot them.

"This is the first death of a dog that I've had," said Sellaro. "And the first death has been the most horrible because she didn't die of natural causes, she died of a gunshot wound -- a helpless animal."

Deputies at the scene found two .40 caliber shell casings at the scene. The casings have been sent to forensics in hopes they may be matched with a weapon.
