Carjacking, gunshot victim found lying in road
Monday, October 3, 2011

SUMTER, SC (WIS) - Sumter police are investigating the carjacking and shooting of a man who was found lying in the street Saturday night.

Major Alvin Holston said the incident happened around 10:45pm Saturday on Lincoln Street, three men wearing masks or bandannas carjacked a man in a blue 2006 Dodge Charger. While the men were pulling the victim out of his car, Holston said a bullet grazed the victim's back.

The men sped off in the victim's car, according to Holston, leaving the man lying in the middle of the road. The man was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Holston said investigators recovered a weapon at the scene, but did not give any information about possible suspects.

Police say the victim didn't live in the neighborhood, but neighbors are still on edge. "I wouldn't sit outside my porch for nothing now," said Alonzo Colclough. "If I have my kids and grandkids come to my house and they are sitting on my front porch and somebody drives by and start shooting, that don't make no sense."
