Bullets narrowly miss sleeping children in apartment drive-by
Monday, October 10, 2011

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A drive-by shooting on Columbiana Drive narrowly missed hitting several sleeping children early Saturday morning according to the Columbia Police Department.

Police say around 5:45am, a woman woke up to the sounds of gunshots at her apartment on 401 Columbiana Drive.

"I was literally scared to even breathe," said the mother, who wished to remain anonymous. "I didn't want to move.

They go on to say the woman inspected her apartment for damage and found a shattered glass door and found a bullet hole just above her sleeping child.

No one was injured.

The road behind the victim's apartment is not a street -- it's actually the drop off zone for Harbison West Elementary. Police say someone did report seeing a small dark car stop on the street that's when shots were fired at the apartment.

As for motive, the mother says she's as perplexed as the police. "I have no idea," she said. "I can't possibly think of any reason why something like that would happen to me."

In the end, the mother is just grateful no one was hurt.

"What if the roles were reversed," asked the mother. "I don't think people think about that."

Columbia Police have no information on potential suspects, but witnesses have said they saw a black car around the time of the shooting. If you can provide any details, call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
