Subject Sought in Purse Snatching

West Columbia, SC – The West Columbia Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a purse snatching suspect. According to Chief Dennis Tyndall, the incident occurred on August 25th at approximately 6:40 p.m. at the K-Mart located at 1500 Charleston Highway. Chief Tyndall stated that the victim was an 82 year old female. As she was loading items into the trunk of her vehicle, the victim was approached from behind by a black male who then grabbed the woman’s purse. The victim fought to hang on to her purse and was drug on the ground by the suspect. The victim suffered minor injuries including scrapes and bruises and required stitches to her hand. The suspect fled on foot and was chased by a witness. The suspect is described as a very dark skinned black male between the ages of 18-25. He has a slender build and is between 5’6” and 5’9” tall. His weight is estimated to be between 130 and 140 lbs. He was wearing a turquoise shirt, black jeans and a black baseball hat. Police are asking that anyone with information concerning this case or the suspect’s identity contact the West Columbia Police Department at 803-794-0721.
