Police: Man Pepper-Sprayed Woman, Tried to Steal Purse
Thursday, September 29, 2011

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Columbia police are searching for a suspect they say attempted two purse-snatchings Tuesday.

The first incident took place Tuesday outside the Aldi's grocery store at 7610 Garners Ferry Road just before noon.

According to officers, the suspect approached a 72-year-old woman walking in the parking lot. Officers say the suspect fired pepper-spray in the woman's face, and tried to steal the woman's purse, but wasn't successful.

Investigators believe the suspect drove a brown/tan/or gold vehicle that could have been a Chevy Malibu or Impala.

Within an hour, deputies say the man struck again at the Hobby Lobby at 5422 Forest Drive. Officers say he tried to take a purse of a woman who was sitting on a bench, but wasn't successful.

As in the other case, the suspect ran away and got in a brown-tan/or gold car.
