Pic Released of Person of Interest in Columbiana Mall Sex Assault
Monday, September 12, 2011

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Columbia police have released pictures of what they say is a person of interest in a sex assault at the Columbiana Mall in the Harbsion area.

On August 17, a woman said a suspect grabbed her around her face and neck while she was exiting a public restroom inside the mall.

The incident took place around 10:30 a.m.

Police say he attempted to fondle her underneath her skirt. The victim says she fought back against the suspect using her hands and high heels. Officers say the two then fell to the ground. During the struggle, the woman kept screaming, and after several moments, the suspect ran out of the mall.

The victim received no serious injuries.

The victim describes the suspect as being a black man with possibly a beard, between the ages of 25 and 30-years-old, 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing approximately 250 pounds. He was possibly wearing a dirty, white T-shirt, and dark pants.

Officers say the person of interest was seen on surveillance video walking in the same direction as the victim prior to the assault. Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott says he's hoping the public will recognize the man.

If you recognize this man or know anything about the assault call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
