Suspicious package closes downtown street

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Emergency crews are investigating a suspicious item found near the Strom Thurmond building in downtown Columbia Thursday morning.

Columbia police, firefighters and federal officials are on the scene.

Police have blocked off the 1000 block of Laurel Street between Assembly St. and Gadsden St. while they investigate.

There have been no evacuations in the area. Police have not said exactly what the suspicious item is.
