Sheriff: Burglars packed lunch for crime at abandoned school
Wednesday, August 3, 2011

ORANGEBURG, SC - Orangeburg County sheriff's deputies arrested 3 Orangeburg County men they say prepared packed lunches before they broke into an abandoned school Monday morning to steal aluminum.

“With the help of a concerned citizen, deputies were able to catch the thieves while they were using a pickup truck to rip apart a wall of the building,” said Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell. “These guys came prepared. They had a generator, chains, and they brought their lunch, so they were expecting to be there for a while.”

Deputies say Orangeburg District Three officials also responded to the scene of the Old Danztler School in Santee.

According to officials, the school has not been in use for years and no trespassing signs are posted and the gate is locked.

Ravenell advises the community to observe properties that are not in use daily, as vandals can take advantage of limited movement and cause thousands of dollars in damage. “Stealing is stealing, If you can prepare a packed lunch, then you can go get a job,” said Ravenell. "Just because the property is not in use doesn’t make it a free for all.”

Ravenell said deputies are investigating receipts from recycling centers were found in the suspects' vehicle.
