One arrested in home invasion, another on the loose
Monday, August 1, 2011

KERSHAW COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Deputies arrested one man and are looking for another in an early morning home invasion in East Camden.

Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews said deputies responded to a call on Denton Street shortly after midnight on Monday. When they got to the home, deputies noticed a dark colored SUV sitting in the middle of the road with its lights off. They initiated a traffic stop, but the vehicle took off. As the SUV was stopping a few blocks later, a passenger jumped out of the vehicle while it was still moving, fell face down on the pavement, but then ran off, according to investigators.

The driver of the vehicle, 24-year-old Jarvis Renard Jones, was arrested at the scene. Investigators found a .30 caliber rifle and ammunition in the vehicle. The rifle was reportedly stolen from a break-in in Bethune, the sheriff said.

According to Matthews, a man and a woman were in their Denton St. home when two men broke in and one of the assailants pistol-whipped the man while asking where their money was. After giving the men the money that they had, the woman called 911.

The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office bloodhound team was called to the scene and struck a trail, but deputies were unable to locate the second subject. Investigators discovered a small amount of marijuana in the home and there is some indication that the home invaders thought the occupants may have had significant money from drug sales, Matthews said.

"Our investigators are still interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence," said Matthews." It is likely that Jones will be charged with possession of a stolen firearm, armed robbery, first-degree burglary, and kidnapping."

Jones is being held in the Kershaw County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing. "It will only be a matter of time before we determine who the second suspect is and when we do, we will get him off the streets as quickly as possible," said Matthews.
