Caught on tape: Man assaults woman, steals her purse
Friday, August 26, 2011

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Police hope the public will recognize a man in surveillance video accused of stealing a woman's purse and assaulting her.

Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott said the incident happened on August 18 shortly before 7:00 p.m. at the Bi-Lo grocery store at 4464 Devine Street.

The suspect is seen on video at the front entrance of the store standing against a wall. As the female victim approaches the store, the suspect walks up to her and, in a matter of seconds, grabs her purse and throws her to the ground. The suspect then runs to the back of the store near the Hampton Park apartment complex.

The victim was injured during the incident, but none of the injuries were serious, police said. Several citizens saw the woman lying on the ground and ran to her aid. One person is even seen on video chasing after the suspect. The suspect managed to get away on foot.

The suspect is described as a dark-skinned, black male, approximately 5' 9", weighing 170 pounds, possibly in his mid 20's, wearing a dark blue or purple tank top, and dark colored cargo-style pants and white on his tennis shoes.

Chief Scott encourages citizens with information about this crime to call, text or submit online, their anonymous tip to Crimestoppers in any of the following ways: CALL toll-free, 888-CRIME-SC., TEXT to CRIMES (274637), and mark the beginning of the message with "TIPSC," followed by the tip information, or LOG onto: www.midlandscrimestoppers.com, and click on the red "Submit a tip" tab.

The descriptions of the suspect(s) given by authorities are similar, but police are not connecting the two similar crimes.
