Arrests made in Church Burglaries
Thursday, August 11, 2011

Lancaster, SC – The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two people in connection with a string of burglaries including several at a local church. Devyn Martin (W/M Age 19) of 10382 Silver Mine Rd., Indian Land and Kevin Smet (W/M Age 18) of 7372 Henry Harris Rd., Indian Land have both been arrested and charged with multiple counts of Burglary and larceny.

Smet and Martin were arrested Sunday night after deputies who were checking property at the Higher Ground Church on Possum Hollow Rd. found them loading stolen property from the church onto a moped. Deputies then discovered that Smet and Martin had just burglarized the church. Deputies had increased patrols in the area due to several other burglaries at the church.

As a result of the investigation that followed, Smet and Martin were each charged with 3 counts of Burglary 2nd Degree and 1 count of attempted burglary. The Higher Ground Church was burglarized on July 25th, August 1st, August 4th, and August 7th. Smet and Martin were charged in all four incidents.

Smet and Martin were also charged in connection with two larcenies (2 counts petit larceny each) that occurred on Old Bailes Rd. on August 1st, 2011. Smet and Martin were charged with the theft of a GPS system from a vehicle at a business on Old Bailes Rd. and the theft of a vehicle that had been parked at a repair shop on Old Bailes Rd.

Smet and Martin were also charged with Burglary 2nd Degree in connection with a burglary and larceny that occurred at Victori Cycle on Fort Mill Hwy on Aug. 2nd, 2011.

Smet and Martin remain incarcerated at the Lancaster County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.

Sheriff Faile said, “Deputies Funderburk and Lawson did an excellent job apprehending these individuals. These deputies were out there diligently patrolling their area and were able to catch these suspects red handed. As a result of that, our investigators were then able to solve some additional cases.”
