Woman Arrested After Standoff With Deputies
Wednesday, July 20, 2011

LAURENS COUNTY, S.C. -- Early Wednesday monring, Laurens County deputies surrounded the home of a woman who they said was armed and distraught over her boyfriend.
The woman was taken into custody about two hours later, deputies confirmed.
The woman, believed to be in her 20s, was in the home with her mother and her mother's boyfriend and sister, but they had all left the house, according to Laurens County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Judy Stiles.

The call came in about 4 a.m., Stiles said.

The house is located in the 500 block of Ritchie Road. It is a dirt road off Pennington Road and Highway 418 in Laurens County just past Fountain Inn and the Greenville County line. About a dozen squad cars lined the dirt road during the standoff.

Stiles said the woman had a .22-caliber handgun and fired it out of the house several times. Stiles said she did not know if the woman fired randomly or at deputies.
The woman was barricaded in her bedroom in the back of the house, according to Stiles.

Stiles said Sheriff Ricky Chastain and several deputies communicated with the woman to get her to put down her weapons and surrender.

Many of the deputies at this standoff were also involved with another standoff last week that resulted in the death of a deputy.

Deputy Roger Rice was killed when assisting the Fountain Inn Police Department with the questioning of a man accused in a murder. The man fired on Rice and other deputies, then barricaded himself in a home, according to Stiles.

Stiles called Wednesday's standoff a tense situation.

The media at scene was asked to keep their car lights off so the woman would not be able to see deputies clearly, Stiles said.

The woman was taken into custody about 6:30 a.m., Stiles confirmed.
