Victim's relative arrested after fatal shooting
Monday, July 11, 2011

SUMTER, SC (WIS) - A 23-year-old was fatally shot late Saturday night, and the Sumter County Sheriff's Office said the man's relative was charged with his murder.

Deputies responded to the 600 block of Bernice Court around 11:30 p.m. and found Marcus Lewis unresponsive in one of the rooms at the home. They said he had sustained a single gunshot wound to the upper body.

Medics were dispatched, and Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene.

After gathering witness statements, Sheriff Anthony Dennis said they were able to determine that Lewis was in the room with a relative when a gunshot was heard and the relative was seen leaving the home.

Sheriff Dennis said 22-year-old John Calvin Lewis was named a person of interest in the case.

John eventually turned himself in to police without incident Sunday.

The incident remains under investigation.
