Police arrest one in cabbie robberies
Wednesday, July 13, 2011

COLUMBIA, SC - 18-year-old who allegedly called cab drivers from vacant lots before robbing them at gunpoint – and shooting one of them – has been arrested by Columbia police.

Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott said police are searching for a second suspect in the string of violent robberies that has unnerved the city’s taxi drivers. One driver remains hospitalized after being shot during a July 2 robbery, and a driver was pistol-whipped in another case. Scott announced the arrest during a Tuesday afternoon press conference with representatives from several city cab companies standing at his side.

“We will not tolerate them becoming repeated victims,” Scott said. “These robberies have become more violent as they’re happening.”

Janoblin Maurice Bracy-Brown of Van Heise Street, near the intersection of Two Notch and Covenant roads, has been charged with attempted murder, two counts of robbery, first-degree assault, and two counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to records at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. He is being held without bond.

Police have tied Bracy-Brown to two of three robberies that happened between June 24 and July 2, Scott said. No cab drivers have been robbed since Bracy-Brown was arrested on Friday, he said.

All of the robberies occurred in the early morning hours and in the same area of town. The taxis would be dispatched to vacant lots where the two men were waiting to rob them.

Police are asking anyone with information on the unidentified second suspect to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-274-6372.
