MAN SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON WITHOUT PAROLE FOR DENNY TERRACE CRIME SPREE
Friday, July 22, 2011

COLUMBIA, SC - A Columbia man received a life prison sentence without the possibility of parole after a Richland County jury found him guilty of a 2009 Denny Terrace crime spree which resulted in the death Linda Derrick. Elbert Lee Wallace, 47, was found guilty of two counts of armed robbery, two counts of first degree burglary, one count of second degree burglary, assault and battery with intent to kill, and murder at the conclusion of his four-day jury trial.

Circuit Judge Clifton Newman sentenced Wallace to three (3) life sentences without parole for the murder, armed robbery and burglary committed against victim, Linda Derrick; a total of eighty (80) years for the burglary, armed robbery and assault and battery with intent to kill victim, Carolyn Webb; and fifteen (15) years for the burglary at Christ Lutheran Church.

“Wallace has been in jail since he was apprehended on February 1, 2009 and will now spend the rest of his life in prison. This case is a good example of how communities, working with law enforcement and the Solicitor’s office, can secure justice,” says Solicitor Dan Johnson.

Wallace’s prior criminal record includes fourteen (14) fraudulent check charges in 2008, attempted robbery in 1988, for which he received a ten (10) year sentence, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, for which he also received a ten (10) year sentence in 1998, as well as contempt of court in 1991.

After his arrest for the murder of Linda Derrick, law enforcement was able to link him to about half a dozen other burglaries (mostly with DNA evidence) in the Denny Terrace area. Sixty-two-year-old Linda Derrick was found beaten to death by her family on January 31, 2009, and Carolyn Webb had been beaten and stabbed earlier that same day. Both of the women and the church were robbed. The Solicitor’s office was seeking life without parole sentences for Wallace due to the violent and brutal nature of his crimes.
