Firefighter riding bicycle hospitalized after hit-and-run

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Police are looking for the driver who fled after hitting a Columbia firefighter who was riding a bicycle early Tuesday morning on Bluff Road.

According to the Highway Patrol, the cyclist was struck by an unknown vehicle in the 1900 block of Bluff Road shortly before 6:00 a.m. Troopers say the cyclist was traveling west when he was struck from behind. The vehicle left the scene.

Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins said late Monday morning that the victim in the hit-and-run is a Columbia firefighter. He was taken to the hospital in serious condition. Troopers said the victim was wearing a helmet.

The accident happened about a mile northwest of I-77 near Blair Road.

The name of the victim has not been released.

Troopers do not have a good description of the vehicle, but say it may have front windshield damage. If you know anything about this incident, you are urged to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
