CPD sponsors Inaugural 5k Run/Walk

COLUMBIA, SC - Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott, the Police Municipal Foundation and Strictly Running announce the first 5K Run/Walk designed to promote Columbia as a safe place to work, live and visit. The Capital City Safe 5K Run/Walk,” is set for July 22, 2011 at 7:45 PM.

The 3.1 mile event will begin at the 1700 block of Main Street, then south toward the State House through the “candle-lit” University community and will end at the 1100 block of Hampton Street at the Columbia Museum of Art.

The Run/Walk will be a certified for accuracy by a USA Track and Field Course Measurer. The event has several age categories for male and female participants:

(10 & under/11-14/15-19/ 20-24/ 25-29/30-34/35-39/40-44/45-49/ 50-54/ 55-59/ 60-64/65-69/70 and Over); the top three winners in each category will receive a gold, silver or bronze medal. There will also be top female and male overall winners. The course will include post race refreshments, water stops and monitors and water misting stations.

Chief Scott says, “This is an exciting time for the Department. Not only are we promoting a healthy lifestyle for our officers, we are continuing the strong relationship with our community partners. The Run/Walk is a family event. We encourage everyone who is physically able to participate to sign up with us and walk or run for a good cause.”

All proceeds from the event will benefit the enhancement and growth of the department through training, community involvement, crime prevention and officer support.

The race is sponsored by the Columbia Police Department, the Police Municipal Foundation, and Strictly Running.

Several of CPD’s Specialized Units will be on hand to assist with the 5K including: the Pro-active Community Enforcement (PACE), Drug Suppression Team (DST), K-9 Unit, Regional Officers as well as State Constables.

Selwyn Blake of Strictly Running says, “Wow! We are very happy to be working with the Columbia Police Department on the First Annual “Capital City Safe 5K Run/Walk”. The 5k Course is very well designed to show off downtown Columbia and the University of South Carolina. This course is super fast, flat and safe. All levels of runners and walkers are welcomed to join us!”

Chief Scott extends his gratitude to the coordinators, businesses and community partners for helping to make this event possible including: Shakespeare Fishing Tackle, Pepsi Bottling Group, Sharper Identity and Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina.
