Sheriff: Newberry man shoots pregnant girlfriend in the face
Wednesday, June 15, 2011

NEWBERRY, SC (WIS) - Investigators say a man accused of shooting his pregnant girlfriend in the face turned himself in at the Newberry County Detention Center early Wednesday morning.

21-year-old Nigel Kendall Thomas was on the run after an afternoon domestic dispute turned violent and investigators say he shot Alena Loretta Marbury, 21, in the face.

Thomas and Marbury were temporarily staying at a home in Silverstreet when the argument broke out between the two of them. Foster said Thomas pulled out a small-caliber pistol and shot Marbury once in the right cheek.

A family member drove Marbury to Newberry Hospital, from which she was airlifted to another hospital. Foster said Marbury was alert upon arrival to the hospital, but deputies are waiting for an update on her condition upon arrival at the trauma center.

Sheriff Lee Foster said Thomas and Marbury had been dating for about 18 months, and Marbury is five months pregnant with Thomas' child.

Investigators say that an arrest warrant has been issued charging Thomas with attempted murder.

Thomas surrendered himself around 2:30 a.m. A bond hearing has not yet been scheduled.
