Man shot after fight over child
Tuesday, June 14, 2011

SANTEE, SC - A dispute over kids waking up a 1-year-old ended with a shooting in Santee, according to an Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office incident report.

Now officials are looking for David Zeigler III of 250 Hickson Drive, Orangeburg. The 24-year-old is accused of attempted murder, possession of a weapon, unlawful carrying of a pistol, first-offense possession of cocaine and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Deputies were called to a Sausito Court home around 6:10 a.m Saturday by a woman who said her boyfriend was shot.

She said the two were in bed when they heard a car drive up. When her boyfriend answered the door, she heard a gunshot and then heard her boyfriend fall to the floor.

As the man fell, he told the woman, "Ah, baby, they shot me," the report said. He asked her to call 911.

A deputy reported "he stated while he was falling in and out of consciousness that David shot him."

The 23-year-old man was transported to Palmetto Health Richland with one gunshot wound to the upper chest. He is said to be in "stable but serious" condition.

Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said, "The male victim and his girlfriend had been arguing in their home earlier Saturday morning when Zeigler stepped in."

The argument, which happened around midnight, was reportedly over the woman's nephew and children waking the couple's 1-year-old son.

"Zeigler and the victim continued to argue until the girlfriend asked Zeigler to leave. Zeigler returned later Saturday morning and shot the male victim once in the abdomen," the report said.

Anyone with information concerning Zeigler's whereabouts is asked to call Crimestoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or the Sheriff's Office at 803-534-3550.
