Family witnesses store clerk shooting
Monday, June 6, 2011

LANCASTER, S.C. -- The owner of a gas station convenience store was shot in the chest while stocking shelves Saturday night and his wife and children witnessed the shooting.

A man armed with a shotgun walked into the Stop-N-Shop, 2147 McIlwain Road, at about 11:12 p.m.

Paresh Patel, known as "Swami" to folks in the area, was stocking shelves and getting ready to close when the man walked in and tried to rob him. Patel fought with the man. Deputies say the man shot Patel several times in the chest and ran out of the store without taking anything.

Neighbors and passersby ran to help.

A witness says Patel was able to talk as they waited for paramedics to arrive.

“He asked me don’t let him die,” said the witness who did not want to be identified. “He didn’t want his kids to see him die. It about tore my heart out. My heart really goes out to the family."

Patel's wife and three children were in the store at the time of the shooting. They were not injured.

Patel was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center. Doctors say Patel was put in a coma to help stabilize his recovery.

The Stop-N-Shop does have a surveillance system. Investigators are looking at the tape.

The armed man was wearing a hood that covered his entire face, except for his eyes.
