City to honor Gamecocks with parade
Wednesday, June 29, 2011

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The City of Columbia will honor the baseball Gamecocks with a parade and celebration Friday.

"Coach Ray Tanner and his team continue to prove that if you work hard, believe in yourself and aim for the stars you can do the impossible," said Mayor Steve Benjamin. "We're honoring them because they are more than simply an outstanding team. They are simply outstanding."

The parade is scheduled to begin at Noon and will march south down Main Street from Laurel Street to Gervais Street. The parade will conclude State House grounds with a ceremony and celebration.

All those planning to attend the parade and/or celebration are encouraged to wear garnet and black to show their support for the team.

Street level parking will be prohibited along the parade route. Parking will be free in the Sumter Street Garage located on Sumter Street between Washington and Hampton, and in the Taylor Street Garage located at Taylor and Assembly from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Meters will not be enforced from Assembly to Sumter, Laurel to Gervais during that same period.

Last year, thousands of Gamecock fans from all over the state packed downtown Columbia for a parade honoring the 2010 team.
