SC: Faux cop targeting Hispanics, stealing cash
Tuesday, May 17, 2011

LANCASTER, SC (WBTV) - The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office says someone impersonating a Lancaster police officer has robbed at least two different people in separate incidents across the county.

According to a news release sent from the sheriff's office, two Hispanic men reported being robbed on Saturday night between 10:15 p.m. and 11:35 p.m. by a person dressed in a police uniform and a dark baseball cap. The robberies happened in two separate incidents.

The men describe the faux-cop as a male, approximately 6 feet tall and weighing 180-185 pounds. He was wearing what was described as a police uniform and baseball cap with "POLICE" on the front. The sheriff's office says the man was driving a dark colored SUV, possibly a newer model Jeep Cherokee.

In both instances, the victims were approached by the subject and questioned about their identification. The suspect handcuffed the victims and took their wallets and went through them, pretending to be looking for identification. The suspect replaced the victims' wallets and then left.

Both victims immediately discovered that their cash was missing from their wallets.

No arrests have been made in this case and it is being actively investigated. Deputies believe the man is targeting the Hispanic community. If confronted with a similar situation, the Sheriff's Office recommends that you be compliant and do not fight with the suspect.

However, you should note the description of the suspect, his clothing his vehicle, and his last known direction of travel and immediately call 911 when it is safe to do so.
