Richland Co. deputies trying to solve 14-year-old cold case
Thursday, May 19, 2011

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - It's been nearly 14 years since the bodies of two men were found in Midlands woods, and their killer is still on the run.

George Parnell and Leon Washington's loved ones have been waiting more than decade for answers. Richland County sheriff's investigator Dowl Thompson says their case is stone cold. "Disappointed that people out there in the community haven't spoken up," said Thompson. "It could happen to them or theirs."

In June 1997, George and Leon were in the Crane Forest area in Columbia. It's the last place they were seen alive.

Five months later, near Taylor Chappel Road, their remains were found in this wooded area. Thompson says it appears they'd been shot.

"We believe that there's some people who are likely still in the area who know exactly what happened, who did what and why," said Thompson. "We need them to have the courage to say so."

No matter how small the tip, Thompson says they cracked a 2009 cold case because of viewers like you. Now he needs your help solving this one. "We feel frustrated that we have not been able to bring it to closure," said Thompson.
