Man shot and left on side of road
Saturday, May 21, 2011

ORANGEBURG, SC (WIS) - Investigators in Orangeburg County are trying to figure out who shot a man in the neck and left him for dead on the side of a road.

The victim, Avertano Morales, was airlifted to Palmetto Richland hospital Wednesday night after being found on the side of Charleston Highway.

Deputies were called to 2537 Charleston Highway after a caller said her husband heard a gunshot outside their home around 7:15 p.m. When they looked outside, they saw Morales lying by their mailbox with a gunshot wound to his neck.

They drove Morales closer to their home in their vehicle and called 911. The couple reported to deputies that they did not see anything suspicious.

Deputies were unable to get any information from the victim because of his condition. A spokesperson from the sheriff's department said investigators do not believe the gunshot was self-inflicted.

If you know who shot Avertano Morales, you are urged to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. You could be eligible for a cash reward.
