Body found in woods likely a homicide, sheriff says
Thursday, May 26, 2011

MAYBINTON, SC (WIS) - Investigators believe a person found dead Wednesday afternoon in a remote area in the Sumter National Forest was murdered, according to Newberry County deputies.

Sheriff Lee Foster said the body was found in a wooded area near the Maybinton community. Investigators are still processing the crime scene, which is located on a gravel road off of Brazleman's Bridge Road.

Authorities say it is far too preliminary in the investigation to determine an identification of the body or the cause of death, but Foster said there is a reasonable assumption this is a homicide.

Deputies believe another person dragged the body from the road to woods. Investigators found the body based on a tip from a citizen.

Investigators from the Lexington County Sheriff's Office are on scene as the two agencies work together to see if the body may be related to a missing persons case from Lexington County.

The Newberry County Coroner's Office and a Forensic Pathologist from Newberry Pathology are also on scene and assisting with the investigation. An autopsy will be done Thursday morning, and a forensic team will work with that info to identify the body.
