News Advisory- Richland County Sheriff's Office
Wednesday, March 2, 2011

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC - Sheriff Leon Lott released a warning to the public for all citizens to be on the lookout for scammers who are impersonating the police on the telephone.

Sheriff Leon Lott stated that two citizens have reported receiving telephone calls stating the caller is an investigator with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. On one occasion the caller is claiming to have video of the citizen in a car with a drug dealer. On the second occasion the caller stated they have video of the citizen’s car being involved in a crime. The caller is telling the citizen that for an administrative fee of $100 they will make the video disappear. The caller asks to verify the citizen’s date of birth and address but when confronted, is hanging up.

Sheriff Leon Lott stated that investigators will often call citizens, victims and suspects on the telephone but will not ask to verify name, date of birth or addresses. The Sheriff added that real investigators will properly identify themselves and normally will ask to meet with citizens face to face.

Sheriff Leon Lott is asking that if you question the validity of the person on the telephone -- ask for their badge number or what agency they are with and then call law enforcement and ask to verify the call was authentic. The Sheriff is asking that if anyone has been the victim of a call of this nature to please report it to law enforcement immediately.

If you, or someone you know, have any information regarding any crime, you are encouraged to contact Crimestoppers. You could earn a reward up to $1,000.
