Student Accused of Having Gun at School
Friday, February 4, 2011

Richland County, SC (WLTX) -- Deputies arrested a Richland Northeast High School student after they say other students alerted them that the teenager brought a gun to school.

A school resource officer found the student in class and the teen told the officer that he had left the weapon in the woods across the street from the school.

Deputies with the Richland County Sheriff's Department say they found the gun, took the teen into custody, and transported him to the Department of Juvenile Justice.

"This incident stresses the importance of having a School Resource Officer in each school," said Sheriff Leon Lott in a Thursday news release, "They truly protect the well being of our students."

Lott also applauded the students for being responsible in reporting the weapon. He reminded students that they can earn cash rewards for reporting illegal activity at their school by calling Student CrimeStoppers of the Midlands at 1-888-CRIME-SC or text a tip to "TIPSC."
