Deputies: Thieves Took 4,560 Gallons of Gas
Wednesday, February 23, 2011

Richland County, SC (WLTX) -- Richland County deputies are searching for the person or persons responsible for taking 4,560 gallons of gas from a convenience store on Monticello Road.

Investigators with the Richland County Sheriff's Department say the suspect or suspects took the gasoline during two incidents at the Pitt Stop at 5901 Monticello Road.

Deputies say the suspects manually programmed the gas pumps without permission.

On Dec. 12, 2010 at about 8 p.m., deputies say someone took 430 gallons of premium gas and 790 gallons of diesel were taken. Officials say that that gas was worth $2,953.

Deputies say on Jan. 24 at 8 p.m., the suspect or suspects took 1,430 gallons of premium gas and another 1,910 gallon of diesel. This time, they say the value was $10,721.

"Not only were they able to fill up the truck and the trailer, they filled up some other cars that were at the gas pumps as well," says Sgt. Chris Lindler, "We don't know exactly what it was used for."

He says it's not necessarily unusual that clerks in the store wouldn't have noticed. "You have bigger trucks that come in and fill up and you have thousands of people that go by those gas stations a day," he explains.

And while no one was hurt in either incident, Lindler says, "The amount of gasoline that was taken, with the prices of gas these days, it's cause a big loss for Brandy Petroleum."

Investigators think the thieves are nearby. "We believe that somebody in that area is probably going to know who those guys are that are driving the pickup truck," Lindler says, "I don't think they're probably from anywhere else other than right here."
