Police: Somebody killed 3-year-old and mother
Monday, January 10, 2011

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A woman and her three-year-old child are dead, and the Columbia Police Department is calling their deaths homicides.

Interim Police Chief Randy Scott said officers went to an apartment at 195 Brook Pines Drive around 10:00am Sunday after the victims' family had been unable to reach them since Thursday. When they entered the home, they found the woman and her child unresponsive.

"Oh Lord, that's awful to take a child's life and a mother," said neighbor Darlene Pringle after finding out her neighbors were found dead.

The cause of death for either victim has not yet been determined, but Chief Scott said there are signs of foul play. "I just could not imagine, with eight kids myself, someone doing this to a mother and a child regardless of the reason," said Scott. "There is no reason."

Police are not releasing the victim's names yet. They said the incident is isolated and neighbors should not be worried for their safety. However, that's not easy for Pringle whose babysits her grandkids. She's hoping whoever did this is found soon. "They need to come forward," Pringle claimed, "When they catch him, they need to throw the book at him."

The Columbia Police Department is working with the Richland County Coroner's Office on this matter.
