Men Caught Burglarizing Apartment
Saturday, January 29, 2011

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WLTX) - Deputies arrested two gunmen they say were caught in the act of burglarizing an apartment at The Landings.

Officials with the Richland County Sheriff's Department say a quick citizen response to the crime is what led to the arrests.

Last month, deputies sent a message to residents who had signed up for their emergency notification system about a gold compact car that they say was connected to a number of burglaries.

A woman who received the message noticed a similar car driving slowly down her street, turning around several times, as the citizen stood by her mailbox.

Deputies say the woman got in her car and followed the gold vehicle long enough to copy down its license plate. That's when the woman saw the car drive into the Landing apartment complex, and she called authorities, investigators say.

Sheriff Leon Lott said the citizens in the community help them police the area by keeping aware of their neighborhood and keeping open communication with authorities. Lott said for residents to be mindful of their surroundings and to support criminal activity. The sheriff warned citizens that someone stopping by their house to ask for directions could be a burglar casing the home and checking to see if anyone is inside.

Lott said concerned citizens should immediately write down a description of suspicious people and even text it to themselves so they can report it to authorities later.
